vili Though there are many elementary English Text-Books on Botany, they deal with plants not generally known to the people of this country. I have, therefore, ventured to write this book in the belief that teachers in Elementary Schools will find their work easier and more interesting when they have a book in their own vernacular dealing with plants well-known to them. As a close examination of familiar plants is about the best beginning for the study of Botany, only the most common plants are dealt with in this book. Practical work is, of course, indispensable and for the use of this book (except for internal structure) a few mounted needles, a lens of a low magnifying power and a knife will be enough. As the study of internal structure is fascinating and as it is very necessary to clearly understand the physiology of the plant, the teacher would do well to use a microscope for purposes of demonstration. A good microscope magnifying up to 400 diameters may be got from Messrs. R. J. Beck, or E. Leitz, London for about Rs. 80. This is a close translation of the second edition of my Tamil book and the work of translation has been carried out admirably by M.R.Ry. M. D. Alasingrachariar Avergal, Head Kanarese Pandit Christian College, Madras I have to thank M.R.Ry. H. Sitarama Iyah, B.A. of Hassan, for having read the proofs. MADRAS, ? 1st September 1909.) K.
