19 and formed only a very small part of the equipment necessary for carrying out the work When formerly the manuscripts in the Madras Oriental Library and other places were examined, attention was chiefly directed to matters relating to the first volume leaving the others for fuller investigation at some future time Unfortunately, however, it was found on a second visit that a great many of the manuscripts formerly noticed had been lost or destioyed by moths. And it was not possible even after a diligent search to procure elsewhere copies of these lost manuscripts This accounts for the very brief notices of some of the poets, which are based on the meagre notes taken formerly Another trouble that had to be contended with was the extreme difficulty in obtaining on loan even for a short period inanuscripts from their owners. It is to be deplored that many owners of manuscripts have a strong dısınclination even to show them to others, not to speak of lending them even for a day or two Some even go so far as to deny the possession of any manuscripts Further, my heavy official duties left very little time at my disposal to attend to this self-imposed task I had to do it singlehanded whenever I could snatch a little leisure There was moreover considerable delay in the press owing to shortage of paper due to the war, and other (utuses. These facts account for the long delay in the appearance of this volume. For the purposes of this voluinel examined the manuscripts in the Madras Oriental Library, the Mysore Oriental Library, the Sarasvati-bhandara of the Mysore Palace, and the private libraries of Messrs Dorbalı-Sastri of Sravand Belgola, M A Rainanuja Iyengar of Mysore, Subba-Pandit and Narasimha-Sastri of Agara, Yelandur Taluk, Patel 1svaraiya of Agrahara, Koratıgere Sub-Taluk, Basuvalingayya of the Hıriya-matha ai Kunigal, and BommarasaPandit of the Archaeological Office, Bangalore Some manuscripts were kindly sent for reference by Messrs Karnataka-bhasharatna Karibasava-Sastri and M V Chandrasekhara-Sastri of Mysore, and K Ramasvami Iyengar and Jirige Basavalıngappa of Bangalore I
