Krishna Sastry, author of this little book was kind enough to read to me the several essays in the course of preparation and I must state that I have derived considerable enjoyment and information. He is a well known Kannada writer of great scholarship and clear thinking and I feel confident that the book will eminently serve the purpose for which it is intended. In compiling these essays the author has kept in view a most important principle viz., gradual development, and this feature ought to recommend its use both to the young and the old alike. The book not only treats of moral subjects, but touches on some of the fundamental studies like Hygiene, Physiology and Economics and the instruction is conveyed in a simple homely Kannada with plenty of apt and familiar illustrations. So far as I can judge the great merit of the book is that it supplies a long-felt want in our schools. It is a suitable book which the pupil and the teacher alike can use either in the composition class or in the teaching of moral lessons, or as a reference book, I recognise with considerable pleasure that in all scientific informa. tions which he has introduced in the book, he is at once correct and up-to-date and without assuming the airs of an abstract theorist, the author treats even philosophical topics in quite an understandable way.
