NOTE TO THE SECOND EDITION. The following are the changes introduced in this edition of Nitimanjari, Part 1: -- I The foot-notes of the former edition liare buen amplified and transferred to the end of the book. Some grammatical and philological notes have been added where they were deemed necessary. 2 The stanzas Ihave been numbered consecutively from the beginning to the end. The following list gives the names of the Tamil works and the number of stanzas translated from each .--Vanneri 1 --40, Múdurai 41 ---66, Vetrivèrkai and Valvali 67 --82, Nitinerivilakkam 83—131, Nitisaíram 133--1 50, Nitiv enbâ 151-171, Nilaliyár 172-325, other works 326-375. 3 The archaic letters r (es) and ? (eg) have been introduced in this edition. It is well-known tlhat in Modern Kannada the letters + (O) and I () are invariably substituted for the above letters. But, uhen either of each pair of the letters -r, r and 1, Lahes the place of the other in a word, there is a change not only in the meaning of the word but also, in some degree, in the grammatical processes which it undergoes; and it is very desirable that students of the Kannada language should have some idea of this. I have, as far as possible, pointed out in the notes the changes which words undergo in consequence of the interchange of r andr and of 1 and 7.
