6. Mr. M. Shama Rao, M.A., Inspector-General of Education, Mysore Government. Mr. Aswatthanarayana Rao discusses in an ably written preface several aspects of Buddhisin in its relation with Vedism and Vedantism which are well worth careful perusal. In the first place, lhe holds, that the teachings of Buddha coincide with those of Vedanta, quoting in support of this statement inany parallel passages and that Buddha was in reality one of the diseminaters of Vedantic Truths and secondly, based as Buddhism is according to his view upon the doctrines of the 'panishads, it teaches the way to knowledge. In this preface he also discusses the ques. tion of the origion of the Vedas and of religious faiths that have prevailed from the early times till now in India and makes an elaborate attempt to remove what he regards as wrong impression that now exists in the minds of the Indian people regarding the purity of Buddha's Teachings. This is, I believe to be the first attempt of its kind in India that has been made during two thousand years past. 7. Mr. A. Govindacharya Swamin, C.E.; M.R.A.S.; M.R.S.A. Buddhisin is as we know an off ---shoot of the l'panishads ; in other words, Vedas specially developed in their ethical aspect. The author has shown this by corresponding passiges between the one literature and the other, in doing which he has dug out the gens eschewing the dross, helping students thus to judge of transandental matters proclaimed by great men, with a vision unobscured by bias. A translation of these into Chinese and Japanese will prove of much value.
