In the transactions of the Royal Asiatic Society Professor Wilson has published an " Analytical Account of the Panchatantra, illustrated with occasional translations." This analysis was founded on an examination of three copies of the work, one of which was procured in Calcutta, the others in Benarese; while these copies agreed in all essential points, it was found that they presented abundantly the variations to be expected in compilations of such a character ; where stauzus and even stories are often omitted or inserted at the pleasure of the transcriber.

In another article on Hindu Fiction, contributed to the British and Foreign Review, Professor Wilson states that a version of the Panchatantra, as current in the South of India has been published in French, by the Abbe Dubois, but not entire. He has only a selection of the stories, taken froin three different copies written one in Kanarese, one, in Telugu, and one in Tamil. It may be doubted if his principle of selection is the niost judicious that could be adopted; “ Nous avons tiré de cet ouvrage tous les apologues qui peuvent interesser un lecteur european, et nous avons omis autres, dont le sens et la inorale ne pouvaient etre entendus qui par le trespetit nombre de personnes versees dans les usages et les coutumes Indiennes auxquelles ces fables font allusion.” This is in fact to onit all that is most characteristic.
