PREFACE. The emendations in the present edition refer prinsipally to kešira ja’s quotations from previous poets. They are based partly on the different readings given in the Appendix to the first edition, but chiefly on a manuscript from Mûdabidaru near Mangalore. A loan of this manuscript on palmyra leaves was obtained through the kind endeavours of the late Dr. A. C. Burnell in the year 1872. It is on the whole, a good one; nevertheless it has been impossible to give a few of the quotations, also with its aid, in a correct form. Such doubtful quotations have been marked out with a sign of interrogation in parenthesis, thus (?). The Commentator on Keširâja's work in the Mûvlabidaru manuscriptisnot Nishthûrasanjayya (or Nishthù rananjayya); his name, however, does not appear. Though the wording of his commentary often is different from that of the firstmentioned one's (it may be called somewhat more archaeic), the meaning is essentially the same. The Editor believes that the present edition fairly represents Kėširâja's original, and trusts that all scholars interested in the Kannada language will, therefore, gratefully welcome it. Dr. F.
