ಉಪೋದ್ಘಾತ. Note.-The following is an extract from my retrospect of the year 1898 written in Feb '99 "His wife, on attaining the womanhood, as we understand the term, began to exhibit at intervals symptoms of insanity, which doctors at first took to be those of hysteria. After treating her for over a year and a half, the Madras doctors pronounced her case to be insanity and advised my friend to send her to the Lunatic Asylum. By this time the disease had assumed a most fearful form A friend has told me that she once caught hold of the beard of a Hakim, who pretended to be a Mantıavadı and did not allow him to escape until she had plucked off a handful of the hair that adorned his chin She caused vexation not only to my friend, but to all his neighbours as well. She had to be chained and locked up in a room. Nevertheless, a Hindu as he was, the thought of sending his wife to the Lunatic Asylum was so repugnant to him that he wired to me to send the medicine of which I had written in one of my letters to him I prepared the thing and sent it accordingly by post in October 1897 with detailed instructions as to its administering and the principles on which the native treatment of the complaint is based Within a fortnight after the commencement of my treatment the patient showed improvement and by the end of December of that year she had rallied so far that she was no more a burden to anydody She ate well, slept well,- too much as my friend reported-took care to cover her person properly and could be left to herself For some time it was doubted whether the improvement was due to the medicine at all,–for, there used to be, even before, somo abatement of the symptoms for a few weeks, irrespective of the treatment adopted But now there can be no doubt The woman has kept up the improvement for over a year It is reported, however, that she is still weak and sickly and does not get her menses regularly and that she sometimes smiles or grieves witbout apparent cause But she is able to cook food for the family occasionally and a friend lately told me that in general health too she had made vast improvement since he saw her in January 1898."
ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ ಹೆಂಗಸಿಗೆ ಎಷಮಜ್ವರವು ಚಾತುರ್ಥಿಯಾಗಿ ನಿಂತು, ಸುಮಾರು ಎಂಟು ತಿಂಗಳ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ತೊಲೆ ಕ್ವಿನೀನನು ಸೇವಿಸಿದಾಗಗ್ಗು ವಾಸಿಯಾಗದೆ, ಪಾಂಡು ವುಂಟಾಗಿ, ಮೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೀರು ಕಾಣಲಿಕ್ಕಾ ರಂಭವಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬರಲಾಗಿ, ಹಿಂದು ಕಷಾಯವನ್ನು ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿ, ಆರಂಭದ ದಿನವೇ ಜ್ವರ ಕಾಣುವ ದಿನವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ, ಆ ಕಷಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಎರಡೂವರೆ ಗ್ರೈನ್ ಕ್ವಿನೀನನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಸರ್ತಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೇರಿಸಿ ಕುಡಿಯಕೊಟ್ಟಲ್ಲಿ, ಜ್ವರ ಕಾಣದೆ ಹೋಯಿತು. ಎರಡನೇ ಜ್ವರಾವರ್ತದ ದಿನದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ, ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಕ್ವಿನೀನನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿತ್ತು. ಇತರ ವೇಳೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅದೇ ಕಷಾಯದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆಯುರ್ವೇದರೀತ್ಯಾ ತಯಾರಿಸಿದ ಮಾತ್ರೆಗಳನ್ನೇ ಕೊಟ್ಟದ್ದು. ಆ ರೋಗಿಗೆ ಜ್ವರ ಕೂಡಲೇ ವಾಸಿಯಾದದ್ದಲ್ಲದೆ, ಪಾಂಡು ಮುಂತಾದ ಉಪದ್ರವಗಳು ಕೆಲವು ವಾರಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಪರಿಹಾರವಾಗಿ, ಸೌಖ್ಯವಾಯಿತು
