ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಗತವೈಭವ
ಬಂಗಾರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಡ ಇಷ್ಟು ಕುಸುರಿನ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಕೆತ್ತುವುದು ಅಶಕ್ಯವೆಂದೂ ವರ್ಣಿಸಿರುವಂಥ ಗುಡಿಯನ್ನು ನಮ್ಮ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕಸ್ಥನೊಬ್ಬನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿರಲು ಅದರ ಅಭಿಮಾನವು ನಮಗೆ ಏನೂ ಇರಬೇಡವೆ?
ಪೂರ್ವಚಾಲುಕ್ಯರು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದ ಶಿಲ್ಪಶಾಸ್ತ್ರವು ಹೊಯ್ಸಳ ಬಲ್ಲಾಳರ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಪರಿಣತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿತೆಂದು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು. ಹಳೇಬೀಡು ಅಥವಾ ದ್ವಾರಸಮುದ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಬೇಲೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿಯ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳೆಂದರೆ ಇಡೀ ಹಿಂದುಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ ಯಾವತ್ತು ಗುಡಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಂದರವಾದವುಗಳೆಂದು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು, – ಅಷ್ಟೇಕೆ? ಪೃಥ್ವಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಗುಡಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಇವು ಎಣಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿವೆ. ಡಾ| ಫರ್ಗ್ಯುಸನ್ನನು ಇವುಗಳ ವಿಷಯವಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿರುವುದೇನೆಂದರೆ -
"There are many buildings in India, which are unsurpassed for delicacy of detail, by any in the world; but the temples at Belur and Halebid surpass even these, for freedom of handling and richness of fancy. The amount of labour which each facet, of this porch (Belur) display is such as I believe never was bestowed on any surface of equal extent in any building in the world."
ಇದರ ಸಾರಾಂಶವೇನೆಂದರೆ- ಹಿಂದುಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ, ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯ ಮಿಕ್ಕ ಗುಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸೂಕ್ಷವಾದ ಕೆಲಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೀರಿಸುವಂಥ ಅನೇಕ ಗುಡಿಗಳುಂಟು. ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಬೇಲೂರ ಮತ್ತು ಹಳೇಬೀಡುಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯ ಗುಡಿಗಳೇ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಾದುವುಗಳು. ಇಷ್ಟು ಕುಸುರಿನ ಕೆಲಸವು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯ ಮಿಕ್ಕ ಯಾವ ಗುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಕಂಡುಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಹಳೇಬೀಡಿನ ಗುಡಿಯ ವಿಷಯವಾಗಿ ಅವನು ಹೇಳಿರುವುದೇನೆಂದರೆ-
