“It is in the exploration and study of purely Indian remains, in the probing of archaic mounds, in the excavation of old Indian cities, and in the copying and reading of ancient inscriptions that a good deal of Indian History is known to us, and can be read by all, but a curtain of dark and romantic mystery hangs over the earlier chapters, of which we are only slowly beginning to lift the corners."
ಸಾರಾಂಶ:- ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಅವಶೇಷಗಳನ್ನೂ ಕೃತ್ರಿಮ ದಿನ್ನೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ಸಂಶೋಧಿಸಿ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡುವುದರಿಂದಲೂ ಪುರಾತನ ಪಟ್ಟಣಗಳನ್ನು ಅಗಿದು ನೋಡುವುದರಿಂದಲೂ ಶಿಲಾಲಿಪಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮುದ್ರಿಸಿ ಅವನ್ನು ಓದಿ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದರಿಂದಲೂ ನಮಗೆ ಹಿಂದುಸ್ಥಾನ ದೇಶದ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಇತಿಹಾಸವು ಗೊತ್ತಾಗಿದೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗುವ ಸಂಭವವಿದೆ. ತೀರ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಬಲವಾದ ಕಟ್ಟು ಕಥೆಗಳ ಮುಸುಕಿನ ತೆರೆಯು ಬಿದ್ದಿದೆ. ಈಗೀಗ ಮಾತ್ರ ಆ ಮುಸುಕಿನ ತೆರೆಯ ಮೂಲಿಗಳೇನೋ ತೆರೆಯಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿವೆ.” ಇದೇ ವಿಷಯವಾಗಿ ಅವರು ಮತ್ತೂ ಹೇಳಿರುವುದೇನೆಂದರೆ "We have a duty to our fore-runners as well as to our contemporaries, and to our descendents-nay-our duty to the two latter classes in itself demands, the recognition of an obligation to the former, since we are the custodians of our own age, of that which has been bequeathed to us by an earlier, and since posterity will rightly blame us, if owing to our neglect, they failed to reap the same advantages, that we have been privileged to enjoy; more-over, how can we expect at the hands of futurity any consi-
